Fortunately, you can still test the store's download system while your store is in Test Mode. Test Mode does not prevent customers from accessing your downloads.
The restricted access is actually due to several settings, which are easy to change or work around while your store is in Test Mode:
1. The "unpaid" status isn't due to Test Mode, it's actually the settings of the payment gateway selected in the System Settings. (Your System Settings are located in your store's administration area at: [Navigation Menu > Admin > System Settings > Setting #34*]). For example, the "manual" payment gateway will always mark new orders as "unpaid". Other payment gateways don't necessarily have this restriction.
2. So, if I'm testing using the manual payment gateway, am I stuck? Nope. You can change any orders to paid status with the click of a button. On the Search Orders page, [Navigation Menu > Orders > Search Orders], there is a "$" icon in the "Status" column. Clicking this icon will toggle that order's paid status between "paid" and "unpaid". (There's also a legend at the bottom of this page that lists what all of the icons do.)
3. Once an order is marked as paid, you'll be able to access that order's downloads.
Bonus Round: Why can't I download files associated with unpaid orders?
Whether or not customers can download files associated with unpaid orders is controlled by an option in the digital product module. This restriction can be toggled on and off. These options are located at: [Navigation Menu > Modules > Digital Delivery > Module Options > Option #2*].
* Note, the numbering of the System Settings may change as settings are added and/or changed in various software updates. This setting is # 34 as of Modular Merchant version 3.0 beta.
