To process a credit card transaction, your Modular Merchant store will connect to your Authorize account during the transaction process to validate and charge the customer's credit card. In order to connect to your Authorize.net account, your store will need your Authorize.net account information on file. This information can be saved in your System Settings. (More information on saving all your Authorize.net System Settings.)

The required information includes your Authorize.net Account Name and a Transaction Key. For security reasons, Authorize.net does not require your Account Password. Instead, you can create a Transaction Key in your Authorize.net account area that replaces your Authorize.net Account password when setting up your Modular Merchant System Settings.

How do I create a Transaction Key?
1. Log in to your Authorize.net account area.

2. Click on the Settings and Profile link in the menu on the left.

3. In the Security section of the page, click the Obtain Transaction Key link.

4. Answer (or, if setting up for the first time, create) your "Secret Question". There is also an option for "Disable Old Transaction key". Checking this will deactivate any previous Transaction Keys you have created. Click the Submit button.

5. An alphanumeric Transaction Key will be displayed. It will look something like: sd9sf93jk3429d0djl. Copy this Transaction Key, and paste it into your Modular Merchant System Settings in the appropriate field.

Troubleshooting:
Using the account password instead of the transaction key with Authorize.net, may result in error messages being displayed when trying to process an order in your store. The most common error message is: This transaction cannot be accepted. (ID: 103)

Thanks for the information as I am planning to sign up with authorize.net for my payment processing. I am currently using www.cardservicesales.com to process my online payments but I heard authorize.net or paypal may be less cost effective.

It's hard to say if Authorize.net and/or PayPal are more or less cost effective than Card Service Sales, because we could not locate information on the rates they offer on their website.

What I can tell you is that we're able to offer Modular Merchant clients Authorize.net accounts with discounted rates through an Authorize.net service provider we work with named e-online data.

What's nice about e-online data is that they specialize in working with online merchants running shopping carts. This is good, because it means that their accounts exclude many of the hidden fees that other Authorize.net providers will sneak in. (See the Things to Watch Out For section below.)

What's more, e-online data has made these special rates publicly available to us, which we've posted on our companion website, www.ModularMerchantAccounts.com, along with definitions of the common terms associated with merchant accounts.

The ModularMerchantAccounts.com website also has a secure online application, so you can get started immediately; instead of embarking on the usual parade of faxing documents back and forth when trying to get started.

I hope this information is helpful. Whichever merchant account provider you choose to go with, be sure to make sure you understand their fee structure!

Starting a new Merchant Account? Things to Watch Out For...
1. Most payment gateways will charge fees higher than their advertised rates for "card not present" transactions. Since shopping cart transactions are done over the internet, that means that all sales done through your website are considered to be "card not present". The charge for "card not present" transactions can be upwards of 2.5% higher with some services! Make sure you know what your provider's fees are for phone and internet orders.

2. Not all payment gateways are compatible with all shopping carts. Every payment gateway runs its own software, which requires the shopping cart developer to write their own unique software in order to communicate with each one. (This communication software is usually referred to as an "API".) Make sure your shopping cart can communicate with the payment gateway you're considering.

3. For anti-fraud reasons, Authorize.net and other payment gateways may require you to have the following items before they can grant a merchant account to an internet-based business:
A) A registered business with a Tax ID number,
B) A "functioning" website, (it doesn't need to be pretty, it just needs to have a home page, terms of service and contact information)
C) A shopping cart already installed on your website; even if it doesn't process transactions yet... since that's why you're applying for the merchant account.
