To accept & process credit card transactions ONLINE in REAL-TIME, your company will need two components:
A) Online store software. (Such as Modular Merchant.)
The online store allows the customer to select products, go to a "checkout" page, and then securely submit their credit card information. The credit card information is submitted to component B, your "Payment Gateway" account.
B) A "Payment Gateway" account. (Sometimes called an "internet merchant account".)
The Payment Gateway account is a third-party service that validates and charges the credit card in real-time over the internet. It's the internet equivalent of a physical "card swipe terminal" used in regular brick-and-mortar stores to process credit cards. Your Payment Gateway account is a separate account in addition to your online store. The two work together, but are separate items.
If you need to start a new payment gateway account, Modular Merchant can help get you started! We have a relationship with Authorize.net & e-Online Data, the largest providers of Internet payment gateway accounts. We provide a secure online application, which can help get you started within minutes. More details, definitions of some common Payment Gateway terminology, and our online application are available on our Merchant Account website at:
