The maximum size of each downloadable file assigned to a digital product is 2 Gigabytes. (Nearly half a standard DVD!)

While this is true, please keep in mind that many servers and personal computer operating systems (unrelated to your Modular Merchant shopping cart or hosting account) will encounter problems when attempting to work with files that are larger than two gigabytes. This is primarily because 32-bit operating systems aren't designed to work with files larger than two gigabytes. (The upcoming 64-bit operating systems will greatly raise the bar on this two gigabyte ceiling.)
If you're the type of person who enjoys boring people at dinner parties with nerdy techno-speak (like I do), you may like to take a look at this article about 32 bit systems vs. 64 bit.

Hi,
Yes, but the original thread is specific to the max size allowable buy mod merch technology, correct? That is to say that if I can use the browser, OS on client and server and they all can pass 2GB then mod merch will not put any limitations on that. It's a pretty crucial thing for some of us.

That is correct. The Modular Merchant shopping cart's digital delivery software doesn't enforce its own limit on file size.
In our experience, file size restrictions could potentially be set by any of the following:
- the server's operating system, (A 32-bit OS can have problems with files larger than 2Gb)
- the configuration of the hosting account housing the download file, (Hosting accounts usually have a finite amount of disk space available)
- the user's ISP, (some ISPs limit the amount of downloads that a user can download per day)
- a databases involved in hosting the files or transferring the file data during the download process. (Many databases have the same restrictions of a 32-bit OS)
But the point is that the Modular Merchant shopping cart software won't say, "Hey, this file is over two gigabytes in size, so I won't download it." It doesn't mind.
