Thank you for your questions! Below is follow-up information on each of your specific points:

The software should allow you to accomplish this. For example, you could create a "Website Subscription" product, which is set to automatically rebill monthly. (Your could also create additional "Website Subscription" products that could bill annual, weekly, etc., to provide a variety of billing options.)

Automating the protection of the /members/ directory on your website so that only members with a paid-up subscription can access it is exactly what Modular Merchant's Subscriptions & Memberships module was designed to do.

Yes, the software would re-check the member's subscription status each time they attempt to access the protected area. This will prevent the members from being able to "sneaking back in" later. Even if a member bookmarks the members area after successfully logging in the first time, the system will validate their subscription status the next time they return.
There's two options for this...
First, the Modular Merchant shopping cart software creates account areas for all of your website members. This account area is built-in to the shopping cart's storefront. When a member logs in to their account area, the "members only" content they are subscribed to is made accessible to them. The member account area has all of the system's content protection tools built in to it.
The second option fits your scenario: protecting a directory on your own website, separate from the shopping cart's built-in member's area. This is possible, but your website must be able to run a script we provide you. This script requires your website to support two things: The "PHP" web-programming language and "Zend Optimizer". These are both common webserver components, and are standard features of most web hosting plans. The provided script will allow your website to connect to your Modular Merchant shopping cart and check a members subscription status when they attempt to access the protected directory. If their subscription is invalid, their access to the protected content on your site is denied.

I do not have any personal experience with the Joomla portal. I don't think we have any clients that use it. Whether or not the module's content protection script will work on a website created through the Joomla portal will depend on the system requirements listed above. If the Joomla portal doesn't provide the access and support required for installing the remote protection script, there may be other site and/or protected content hosting options available.
